The #1 Secret For Getting the Perfect Body

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Every fitness article and new piece of equipment promises quick, easy lasting results if you use their product.  What they never tell you is that there is far more to getting the perfect body than doing 5 minutes of sit-ups or cutting out a bit of junk food.  Everywhere we look nowadays there is a different "perfect" workout plan to achieve our goals.  In fact, there are so many different ideas floating around out there that they often contradict one another, leaving us confused as to which one is the best.  So how can there be just one idea, one secret that helps it all make sense?  Well, there is one thing that is rarely if ever written about when it comes to fitness and nutrition.

The progress must be enjoyable, not just the outcome.  The secret is to teach yourself to love what your are doing, not just the end result.  In the beginning your number one goal shout not be to kill yourself for immediate results, but rather to teach yourself to enjoy what you are doing so that you want to continue and not have to continue day after day.

How much does your mental state have to do with losing weight or getting ripped, or looking good naked?  Everything.  That is why it is so astonishing that it is never written about. There is a science behind this called neuropathic conditioning.  If you learn to link pleasure to your daily exercise routine, you begin to create new neuro pathways within the brain.  The more you work out and keep it pleasurable, the stronger and larger the neuro pathways become.  This causes the release of more hormones, allowing for faster, lasting results and a general feeling of well being.  Conversely, if you link pain and distaste to working out, you begin to create neuro pathways in your brain based on those feelings, making it almost impossible to continue on to your goal.  You literally teach your body to rebel against your workout or rebel against losing weight.  It is a science of programming the body.  The better you program it, the easier it becomes to enjoy what you have started.

It may seem like it's easy to say you will enjoy your workouts, but hard to actually follow through on right?  Wrong.  You must learn to use your imagination! Whatever you need to do to enjoy moving, do it.  Be creative, find a workout routine that changes constantly.    Do whatever it takes. Change where you workout, change what you do each day, change the time of day you work out. Pick out what makes you happy and work at it until you become bored, then move on to something new.  What do you love to do?  Remember to remind yourself over and over just how good you feel after a great workout.  Take 5 minutes and tell yourself over and over how amazing you feel.  You can literally learn to train your body to become happier and happier every single time you work out.  Just put a little effort into it and the results will last the rest of your life.  The science of neuropathic conditioning is by far the most powerful fitness tool that you can use.

I designed a complete workout system with this in mind and I encourage you to learn more about it. Please, visit www.dynamicsofmotion.com to learn more.

How Parents Can Win the Battle To Keep Your Child Safe From Strangers This Holiday Season

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When we think of Holiday shopping, we think of all the glowing lights at our area malls and the various eye-catching decorations in shopping centers. Along with distractions with our 'to do' list in our heads, we get preoccupied with carrying bags and scoping out gifts. But with all the whirlwinds of diversions, we cannot put our guard down with who is scoping out our own children.

To help with this here are the top 7 things parents can do to prevent their young from falling prey to strangers and child kidnappers in the busy hustle and bustle of the season.

1. Stay connected. Make sure you have your children with you whether in a stroller or holding your hand. Even if your child stays next to you other times of the year, all the distractions of toys, decorations, and Santa can make any kid get sidetracked. For older children invest in a family walkie-talkie set. Make sure they know how to use it and check in with them on regular time intervals to know where they are - even if they are right next to you.

2. If your child is lost go right to security. Most malls and shopping centers have security protocol when a child is missing. Don't try to look for your child alone. Let them help you the second you realize you cannot find your child - every moment counts.

3. Know what your child is wearing that day, and carry a recent picture with you in your wallet. Most moms and dads have lots of pictures of the kids, but baby pics are not helpful if your child is lost and security needs to search for them.

4. Teach your child what to do if a stranger approaches them. First - Run away! Second - Tell somebody!

5. Role play with your child ahead of time. Use tactics that some kidnappers have used in the past and teach your children not to 'fall for a stranger's sneaky tricks!" i.e. stranger favorite lures: candy, video games, comic books, toys, telling them "your mommy told me to bring you home" etc.

6. Do not have your child wear anything with their name on it - i.e. back packs, purses, and jackets. Child offenders with pick up these clues and use the child's name when speaking with them to gain trust.

7. Practice, Practice, Practice! Reviewing these strategies not only will help your child remember, but keep it on your mind as well. We all want our children safe, happy and well for more holidays to come.

Swimming Lessons Are Not Enough to Make Preschoolers Watersafe

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The weather is getting warmer and we're all starting to think about pools, beaches and sunshine. We also need to think about water safety for kids. Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death for children ages 1-2 in California, and drownings increase in the summer months, from May - August. Often, though, we read these warnings in ads for swim lessons for infants and toddlers. They don't actually state that swim lessons will make your child safer around the water, but that's the implication. Is it true?

The American Academy of Pediatrics makes a distinction between formal swimming lessons and aquatic programs. Children are not developmentally ready for formal swimming lessons until they're four. You can try to teach them earlier, but they won't really learn it well until they're old enough. One study found that regardless of when children start swim lessons, they learn to swim well at about age 5 ½. Any time infants or toddlers are in or near water, an adult should be within arm's length. That includes bathtubs. Read the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations at aappublications org.

So what about aquatics programs for younger children? There is no evidence to support the idea that children who participate in these programs are less likely to drown.

Should you sign your toddler or preschooler up for swim classes? Absolutely! It's fun, it's great exercise and it helps make them comfortable in the water. Also, many of these classes involve instruction for the adults about water safety. Just don't assume that your child is any safer near the water. Whenever infants or toddlers are in or near water, an adult should be within arm's length. That includes bathtubs. Read the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations here.

Add Walking Variety to Your Workouts

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Why an article about walking? You already know that walking is one of the best exercises. It's free. You don't need any special equipment (other than a sturdy pair of shoes). No trainer is needed: you already know how to do it.

This article will give you some ideas on how to spice up your walking program to fight boredom and accelerate the weight loss benefits.

Fight Boredom

The key to success with any exercise program is to keep doing it on a consistent basis. Make exercise a habit. But sometimes the same routine can lead to boredom. Consider spicing up your walking workouts once in awhile.

Get Different Walking Partners - Maybe you prefer to walk alone and meditate or mentally go over your to-do list for the day, but many people enjoy the social interaction of walking with someone else.

Perhaps you have a friend or neighbor or even your spouse who you walk with during the week. Consider scheduling a walk with someone else on the weekend. Instead of meeting for coffee or going out to eat, call up a friend and suggest a walk in a nearby park or mall.

Change Your Location - In the dead of winter in a cold climate you may not have much choice but to walk on a treadmill or in a mall. But in more temperate climates or during the warmer months, it's invigorating to vary your walking locations. Choose outdoor venues and make a point to notice the natural surroundings.

Listen To What Inspires You - If you prefer to walk alone do you listen to music? Get some new CDs or download some new music into your MP3 player. What about a book on CD? Audio recordings can even be checked out from your library or downloaded from the internet. ITunes has a huge selection of podcasts on just about any subject, and many of them are free.

Burn More Calories

Maybe you'd like to make your walks more challenging. Here are some ways to get your heart pumping a little faster.

Strap on a Backpack - One way to add weight in a comfortable way is to buy a good quality backpack and fill it with books, water bottles, or even rocks. Start out light and work your way up to heavier weights.

Push a Stroller - If you're a Mom or Dad you might already be walking with your kids in a stroller. But if you haven't been doing it consistently, it can be a great way to get your kids some fresh air while you burn some calories. You can even join up with other parents in stroller walking groups that meet up in parks. Check CraigsList for announcements.

Add Some Hills - Walking up and down hills burns more calories and works different muscles than walking on flat ground.

Climb Stairs - If you live an urban area, climbing stairs is an invigorating alternative to walking, especially in inclement weather. You can even take the elevator down to avoid stress on your joints. Climbing stairs in your hotel is also a good workout when your travelling.

Speed Up - If you are the competitive type, time your walks and keep a log. On certain days make a conscious effort to push yourself and beat your best time. Another invigorating workout is interval training. Challenge yourself to walk fast for one block, slower for the next and repeat.

If you are walking on a consistent basis, congratulations you are taking productive steps to better health and sustained weight loss. Vary your routine occasionally to prevent boredom and challenge yourself to better fitness.

The Easter Cat

The Easter Cat Review

The Easter Cat Specifications

Lonely in a house and neighborhood full of grownups (not counting her annoying neighbor Sarah), Millicent craves the comfort of a kitten to call her own. Unfortunately, her mother's allergies make it impossible for a cat to be anywhere near their house. So when Millicent wakes up early one Easter morning and finds a blue-gray kitten by her Easter basket in the living room, her luck seems too good to be true. Unfortunately, it is too good to be true. In no time at all, Millicent and her Blue Angel have become "fugitives from the law," hiding in a secret room under the house while her entire family searches the neighborhood for them, and her mother sneezes miserably.

Meindert DeJong's portrayal of a lonesome girl seeking to forge a connection in her world has a subtle yet moving authenticity. Winner of the Newbery Award for The Wheel on the School, DeJong writes with quiet wit and sensitivity--and a lot of excitement! Lillian Hoban's familiar line drawings are invitingly fuzzy, recalling the illustrations in her picture book series about Arthur (Arthur's Birthday Party) and Frances (A Baby Sister for Frances). Coin Collecting Software Can Make Things Far Easier!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are many people who enjoy the activity of coin collecting for their own personal fulfillment. Such people enjoy collecting coins as a hobby. Apart from being hobbyists, many people collect coins as an investment. These people invest their money in different coins of high value in the hope that one day these coins will turn in a profit for them.

Irrespective of the reasons coin collectors collect coins, this activity is a time consuming and endless process. There are literally million coins in circulation and different coin collectors consider collecting these. For instance, there are international coins, Statehood Quarters, limited edition coins and rare coins that are yet to be collected because they are still in circulation among consumers. Although a coin collector can collect just about any coin, most investors and hobbyists prefer to collect valuable coins.

But, as stated previously, finding these kinds of limited edition, rare and other such valuable coins takes a long time and needs a lot of patience and perseverance. Purchasing is the first factor that needs to be considered. There are a number of coin collectors who miss out on various options available to them while looking to increase their valuable coin collection. If you want to add valuable coins to your coin collection, the best way would be to meet professional coin dealers. There is also the option of using the internet and going to online auction websites.

Although it is ideal to seek help from online auction websites, coin dealers and the internet in order to increase one's valuable coin collection, many people are not sure on how to select. The coin collecting software plays an important role here. There are many different formats in which coin collecting software come, but all coin collecting programs have a common goal; to make it easy for all hobbyists and professional coin collectors to collect coins.

One of the most frequently asked questions regarding coin collecting software involves the price. There are many software that are free and these are usually sought after. Although free coin collecting programs are available for downloading, these software are usually limited. There are many free software programs that provide the user with a list of coins that any enthusiastic coin collector will want to examine. Usually, these software programs give the user the option of checking out coins once acquired and added to the collection. From these points of view, free coin collecting software may seem ideal for organizations, but it is always a good idea to spend a little money, perhaps around $100, and purchase a professional program.

Coin collecting software, as stated previously, varies, but there are a number of professional coin collectors and hobbyists who prefer to pay for the software programs they use. These professional software programs, apart from outlining the worthiness of a coin, will also allow you to check off the coins that are in your collection. All values are kept current by regularly updating using the option of automatic updates like yearly updates.

As discussed earlier, all coin collecting software and in particular the paid ones benefit professional coin collectors and coin hobbyists. Even if you are not certain about using a software program to help you collect coins, it is always worth the shot to see what it is about. A few minutes online should do the trick as any ardent coin collector will not fail to see the many benefits of using a software for collecting coins.

Easter Promises: Desert Rose / Bluegrass Easter (Love Inspired) Review

EASTER PROMISES, two great stories in one book.

DESERT ROSE, by Lois Richer
The Desert Rose was a cute and unique idea for a story. Many scenarios tend to play out in story after story but for me, I have yet to read such a storyline as this. It was refreshing and well written.

BLUEGRASS EASTER, by Allie Pleiter
As always, Allie does not disappoint with her humor. Really, she has some of the greatest lines, always bringing a smile to my face or a chuckle from my lips. I loved Paul's story, and how healing occurred in his life. Loved the transformation of Audrey, and how though she didn't seem to be a "kid" person, was able to connect with Lily, helping to bring her and Paul together.

Thanksgiving: The Law of Attraction

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Do you follow the law of attraction?

Do you know the law of attraction?

The Law of Attraction

The law of attraction basically states that we draw into our lives more of what we focus on.

If we focus on what we do not have, we get more of what we do not have.

When we focus on all that we have and the opportunities in front of us, we attract more of the things we want, more good things, into our lives.

An example

Here is an example from the world of private practice building and marketing.

What I have learned while working with our students, members and mentees in BuidlingYourIdealPractice.com is that where you put your focus influences how well you build your practice.

If you focus on the lack of clients and the competition for them in the marketplace, you instill in yourself fear and the probability that you will stay stuck.

If you focus on the fact that there are more clients out there that need and want your unique service than you could ever get to in your entire life, you bypass fear and lack and your practice grows.

Your personal application

So how can you apply these principles in your own life and situation?

Where do you need to shift your focus from lack to abundance?

My challenge to you in this Thanksgiving season is to use the law of attraction and increase your thanksliving.

A Rose for the Crown: A Novel

A Rose for the Crown: A Novel Review

I love an author who takes a fictional character and tells us all about the history of the time. One of my favourite books is the Queen's Fool by Philippa Gregory because I loved the fictional character of Hannah. This book was as good as that and I loved the character of Kate.

Kate leaves her family home at a tender age to live with her cousin as a companion. There she learns a lot about herbs and healing and becomes best friends with her cousin. Kate is married off to an older man that fortunately doesn't live to long and then she marry's for love, or does she? But the man that she would give her heart to completely and no other is Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Over time she would give him three children, two of them sons.

This is novel takes us to the end of the Yorkist period and into the Tudor raine. It is an excellent account of history blended perfectly with fiction. I loved the way Richard of York, the final York King was portrayed as a compassionate and noble man. I highly recommend this wonderful historical novel!

A Rose for the Crown: A Novel Overview

In A ROSE FOR THE CROWN, we meet one of history's alleged villains, Richard III, through the eyes of the woman who might have been the mother of his illegitimate children, a woman who chose to remain anonymous when the court rewards for a king's mistress would have been great, a woman who loved him for who he really was, no matter what the cost to herself.

As Kate Haute moves from her peasant roots in Kent to the highest circles of fifteenth century England, from her carefree girlhood to a much more worldly middle age, her path is inextricably intertwined with that of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III.

Fictional Kate is woven into the real lives of some of the Wars of the Roses most prominent characters at the court of the charismatic and sensual Yorkist King Edward IV, including John Howard and his wife, Margaret, Queen Elizabeth's kinsman Richard Haute, Henry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham and George, Duke of Clarence.

Christmas Song - Jingle Bells History and Fun Facts!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

'Jingle Bells' is one of the best known Christmas songs in the world yet its history tells us that is not specifically a Christmas song. Known today as a fun and laughter filled Christmas song and it is popular as the subject of parody. James Lord Pierpont originally wrote the song in 1857 and it was copyrighted at the time as 'One Horse Open Sleigh'. The song was reprinted in 1859 with the revised title of 'Jingle Bells'. Pierpont wrote the song for a Thanksgiving program at a church in Savannah, Georgia in the USA where he was the resident organist.

The tune of 'Jingle Bells' has been used in German and French songs to celebrate winter fun. Lyrics are completely unrelated to the ones we all know and love. For example, Francis Blanche wrote the French song 'Vive Le Vent' meaning 'Long Live the Wind' with references to new year's day.
In 1898 'Jingle Bells' was first recorded by the Edison Male Quartette in the USA. It has since been recorded by many great artists including Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters. In 2006 when Kimberley Locke sang it, it became a number one hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Here is a fun fact. In 1965, December 16th 'Jingle Bells' was the first song broadcast from outer space. Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford, the astronauts aboard Gemini 6 played a prank. They relayed to mission control that they saw a UFO with eight smaller UFO's in front. Their reports followed that the pilot in the larger command module UFO was wearing a red suit. The prank concluded with the astronaut duo playing 'Jingle Bells' on a harmonica accompanied by sleigh bells that they had smuggled on board. Today at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum both instruments are on display. Interestingly, they are considered the first musical instruments to be played in space!

'Jingle Bells' has also been the subject of parody. The best known homage to the original song is 'Jingle Bell Rock' by Bobby Helms. In the 1960's children in the USA commonly sang the verse 'Jingle bells, Santa smells, Easter's on its way. Oh what fun it is to ride in a beat up Chevrolet.' Here is another parody of 'Jingle Bells', a verse which adults and children alike loved and continue to love to sing while enjoying a few laughs along the way 'Dashing through the snow, on a pair of broken skis, crashing into trees, and a piece of moldy cheese Ha Ha Ha, the snow is turning red, I think I'm almost dead, please rush me to the hospital before I lose my head. Ha Ha Ha.'

'Jingle Bells' continues to be a Christmas favorite song whether sung in its original form or whether by parody, it is still popular throughout the world today. A song that brings families and communities together sharing good cheer and holiday fun at Christmas time each year!

Pros And Cons On Painting Your Model Car

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The starting point for creating your own water slide decals is to obtain the correct clear backing. It is easiest to start with a ready manufactured sheet of clear decal film. There are several sources; most online model suppliers carry this material. Some suppliers even claim that their paper is manufactured especially for ink jet printers. Secondly there are four methods I am familiar with:

Creating masks for each color separation, masking the clear decal film for each color and applying the colors from lightest to darkest. Or hand painting the design if you're really good at it. Good points: Not too difficult and inexpensive. Drawbacks: Tedious and time consuming if you have to make multiples. Masks have to be thought out and made well.

Silkscreen process. This is a process many of us learned in school. I will not go into detail as any good art book can describe the process far better than I. Pro: Good quality and not too difficult a process if multiples are needed. Con: Alignment can be tricky and skill is required to set-up.

Produce the desired image on a computer, or by hand, or from a photo of the prototype and then take it to a print shop and have it copied on a color photocopier to the clear decal sheet. Pro: Probably the cheapest and easiest set-up for most people. Con: The quality of the final product can be compromised by the quality of the copier and dyes.

Produce the artwork on a computer and generate it to a printer. You can use any common program like Corel Draw or Adobe to do this. Pro: Not too hard for a novice to create, or scan the artwork and many people already have the setup without knowing it. Con: If using an inkjet printer the ink does not always adhere to the paper well and must not be handled until dry. This method works well with Alps printers that use a wax ribbon, but Alps are expensive and I believe they no longer produce printers. A friend used this method to make his own decals for a NASCAR "Superman" logo and the result was very good.

There is also the possibility of having a decal manufacturer produce the decal you want, but that is very pricey and it won't happen overnight. No matter what method is used, you will need to spray a clear coating over the decal to seal in the inks, dyes, etc., as they will run otherwise.

You do not have to prime before painting, but I prefer to for several reasons. The first being that a primer will show any flaws in construction and I really like to find those prior to the final paint scheme. A primer will also help to show if there are any areas where might not stick sufficiently.

The primer coat can also be useful if you wish to paint a lighter color over a dark plastic, or even to get a more uniform coat. Most importantly a primer should help with paint adhesion, but a primer is not a must. I have gotten into the habit of washing a model in warm soapy water before painting. It is very important to make sure all traces of soap are thoroughly rinsed off.

I would not prime anything prior to assembly, as that will negatively affect the adhesion of the glue. As I mostly use an airbrush I usually just spray everything once assembled, though sometimes I just spray areas that I have put a lot of work into. Some small parts like you mentioned do not really require any primer and if hand brushing would just make for more work.

Now then, A #10 xacto blade is the best way to open doors and trunk, you will loose some material but not much as long as you take your time and make small cuts. The kick panel can be replaced with sheet styrene covered with bare-metal foil, I swear by that stuff. Actually, best hinge material for me has been paper clips, easy to bend and work well.

And lastly, appreciate every single minute of your vacation preparation. It is as important as the actual getaway so consider your time and have a blast.

Fundraising For Your Preschool Or Daycare Center

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Most day cares are non-profit organizations that must operate within a tight budget that covers the costs of facilities, staff and all of the equipment and materials for operating a quality and stimulating environment for children. It's a balancing act with little room for extras for the center or it's staff.

One way to offset the cost of extra curriculum, supplies or staff bonus programs is through fundraising. Our moms have successfully raised funds for our daycare centers, enabling them bring in additional music, art and science events, animal encounters, host special celebration days - like Hawaiian Luaus, purchase sun shades for the playground and fund the staff bonus pool.

Listed below are fundraising programs that have been successfully implemented that you can take, adapt and use at your center:

Garage Sales. Gather your family's extras and have a group garage sale to benefit your daycare center. Post signs at school to have other families bring their donations in a few weeks before the sale so you can have time to price and organize the items.

Auction. Have an informal auction of donated goods and services in your daycare's lobby with write-in bids. You can also help organize an auction event, complete with tickets that must be purchased to attend. The event usually has catering, a bar, entertainment and live auction and those costs must be factored into the budget.

Donations. Ask the merchants your frequent regularly if they have goods or services they can donate to the center. Describe the center, what you are raising funds for and explain the donation is tax deductible. Many requests will be positively received. We have found that we've received the best response when collecting donations in the spring, summer and early fall so we're not competing with other donation requests around the holidays. These donations are then incorporated into the school auctions.

Open Ebay Store. Large scale auction events are really only practical one or two times a year for daycare centers because of the costs involved. Consider having a committee that solicits donations year long and sells them in an open market, such as Ebay. It expands your fundraising circle from the immediate circle to a global reach.

Matching Gifts. Remind parents that many corporations have matching gifts programs for donations to non-profit organizations and daycare centers usually qualify. Under this benefit, the corporation may match your cash donation by 50 to 100%.

Artwork By Children. Work with the classroom teachers to create artwork that can be displayed a gallery and sold to parents. Creative projects made by the children or that feature a child's picture make wonderful gifts for family and friends and sell well when priced appropriately.

Recognition. Parents can memorize their children by purchasing an engraved plaque for a wall, a stamped brick for a walkway or a large piece of equipment for the playground. Think about how large non-profit organizations recognize their large donors and adapt it to your environment. Have an area in your newsletter that regularly recognizes contributions from the parents of the center, whether they be monetary, time or goods and services.

Holiday Office Party - Safety First

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In today’s litigious society – and simply because you care – planning the holiday office party must include thoughts toward the safety of guests, especially if you’re serving liquor.

Here are some tips to aid your planning:

First of all, someone always gets assigned to PLAN the party, but you need to assign someone to MONITOR the party. Kind of like the chaperones at the high school prom. Make sure both parties understand your requirements for safety.

Make sure nutritious and filling foods are on the menu, such as sandwiches, cheese, and sausage. Liquor hits an empty stomach faster; food also provides something else to do besides drink. Avoid salty snacks because they make us thirsty. The overall atmosphere does make a difference and you should keep the focus off the liquor.

Given that this study ( [http://www.psu.edu/dept/medialab/research/alconsum.html] ) showed that the highest consumption of alcohol occurs in (1) males (2) who watch more sports on television and (3) are familiar with ads, i.e., have been exposed to them, if you want a disaster (1) set up an open bar where the men can pour their own drinks, (2) add a bigscreen TV with sports showing, (3) put out a few bowls of salted peanuts and popcorn, and (3) promote it beforehand as a You-Know-Wink-Wink, and allow others to talk it up that way. This means that if someone your party has the reputation of being a Big Drunk, you need to make sure they know this year it isn’t going to be like that.

To alleviate this situation, consider adding games, gift-giving, a lavish buffet where the emphasis is on the Australian Rack of Lamb and Russian caviar from Il Tuscano and add entertainment, preferably of the more sedate type. Breaking up the party from time-to-time with these events works well too. People won’t tend to stand in line at the bars as often.

Take a lead in monitoring and directing pre-party anticipatory discussion around the water cooler. Be present and listen up! You can redirect just like you would with a bunch of 4-year-olds getting heavy into the poo-poo jokes. Move in, physically, and then change the subject if it doesn’t change on its own.

Do NOT let guests mix their own drinks. Instead plant your own carefully-chosen bartender who is chintzy with the liquor and also will keep track of how much someone is getting, and how often and will alert you (and cut the person off if need be). You should also move around and check this out yourself. Just as in a bar, someone who is showing signs of being tipsy should be denied further liquor.

If you’re a manager with Emotional Intelligence, you know your people, and should have a good idea of who might be trouble, or cause trouble. Spend more time with them at the beginning of the party, making sure they know you are there (and they know what you know), and then check in with them during the event to see, first-hand, how they are doing.

Even if you’re offering liquor, it’s a smart idea to have plenty of non-alcoholic alternatives. It’s also thoughtful as more people these days don’t drink. Don’t go around encouraging people to “drink up” and don’t let anyone else do it. Sometimes someone will appoint themselves “host with the most,” grab a bottle and start circulating through the crowd topping off glasses.

Liquor punches are a good idea, especially if they are weak and if they are fruit-juice based because that will cause the alcohol to be absorbed more slowly into the blood stream. Know who is making the punch and what they are putting in it. It’s an old college trick to use Everclear, because it’s cheap plus has a higher liquor content.

Ask guests to appoint designated drivers, and if any guests are too inebriated at the end of the party to drive safely, in your opinion, call a taxi, assign them to a sober driver, drive them home, or tell them they’ll be sleeping over. If your party’s in a hotel, you can book some rooms ahead of time as contingency. The money spent on taxis and rooms is well worth it considering the cost of a life, or a lawsuit.

You should close the bar and stop serving drinks at least 90 minutes before the stated end of the party. It’s a good time to bring out a nice dessert and coffee. You should be aware that coffee doesn’t sober anyone up, but it signals a change of scene and also buys time – which does sober people up.

It’s emotionally intelligent to take precautions to make your holiday party not only successful, but safe.
