"Easter 1916" and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)

"Easter 1916" and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions) Review

"'Easter 1916' and Other Poems" is a rich and challenging collection by William Butler Yeats. I read this book as a Dover Thrift Edition. The book includes a 4-page introductory note that discusses the life and career of Yeats (1865-1939), who received the Nobel Prize in Literature. A bibliographic note on the copyright page states that the Dover edition contains Yeats' poems from the volumes "The Wild Swans at Coole" and "Michael Robartes and the Dancer."

Although I found many of these poems obscure and hard to penetrate, I also found many of them haunting and beautiful. And many of the difficult poems opened up to me after additional readings. A mystical thread, as well as an attentiveness to nature, runs throughout this collection.

This book is rich in literary, religious, and mythological allusions. Yeats writes of war, death, grief, aging, love, and beauty. Many of the poems are quite musical--Yeats uses interesting variations in line length, rhyme scheme, poem length, and other effects.

Interestingly, I found the most effective poems in this collection to be those that deal with the relationships and encounters between humans and animals: the majestic "The Wild Swans at Coole," the tender "To a Squirrel at Kyle-Na-Gno," the haunting "On a Political Prisoner," the playful and mystical "The Cat and the Moon," and others.

Of course, there are many additional memorable poems in this collection, such as the deliciously satiric "The Scholars," or "The Second Coming," which has a real prophetic flavor. Overall, a remarkable volume by a significant figure in 20th century literature.

"Easter 1916" and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions) Overview

Immortal verses by one of the 20th century’s greatest poets appear in this compilation of all the poems from The Wild Swans at Coole (1919) and Michael Robartes and the Dancer (1921). Includes "The Second Coming," "A Prayer for My Daughter," "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death," many more.

Easter Review

Although this comment would at first glance appear to be contradictory, this book is both profoundly spiritual and profoundly humanistic. Spiritual in that it deals quite successfully with spiritual issues; belief, disbelief, faith, and skepticism. Humanistic in that it deals with the human situation with a compassionate view of humankind and the struggles to find meaning and peace in today's world.

The book starts out in the first third as a fairly simple and straight forward narrative about an Anglican parrish church, told through the eyes of its many church officials, parrisioners, and visitors. The second third shifts gears completely into the spiritual and emotional struggles of one specific character during the same period of time, showing the true issues within the parrish, only hinted at in the first third. The final third takes up the narrative of the various characters of the first third, retelling the same events through different eyes, and continuing on to a conclusion. A type of catharsis is achieved, at least for some of the characters.

The numerous characters are wonderfully drawn. The prose is at times pure poetry. The story moved me immensely; to tears at times. The story is at times quite humourous and at other times tragic. One passage in the book contains one of the most moving descriptions of a person's death, which is actually one of the most hopeful and spiritual parts of the book.

A slower than normal reading of this book will reward you. Re-reading certain portions as you go along and reviewing the list of the many characters at the front of the book, all add to a better understanding of the story and themes within the book. This book has been added to my list of the best books I have ever read.

I highly recommend this book. As mentioned earlier, the prose itself is beautifully poetic at times. If one is homophobic or disturbed by issues dealing with homosexuality however, they might be troubled by the book.

Easter Overview

Both a devastating portrait of today's Church of England and an audacious reworking of the central myth of Western culture, this novel opens as the parish of St. Mary-in-the-Vale is preparing for Easter. In his Palm Sunday sermon, the vicar explains that Christ's crucifixion and redemption are taking place every day, but he little suspects that, before the week is out, he and his entire congregation will be caught up in a latter-day Passion story that will tear apart their lives. As the week before Easter progresses, a number of shocking events unfold against a backdrop of meticulously observed religious services, giving the novel a chance to scrutinize High Church ritual, evangelical revivalism, and the ancestor worship of the English gentry. With an unforgettable gallery of characters ranging from a Holocaust survivor and an African princess to AIDS patients and Queen Elizabeth II, the story provides a dazzling panorama of contemporary society and throws down a challenge—to believers and nonbelievers alike—to consider anew the problems of suffering and evil.

Read and Share: The Story of Easter

Read and Share: The Story of Easter Review

THE STORY OF EASTER is a part of the Read and Share Bible series. My son and I had a great time making this part of our nightly reading just before Easter. Gwen Ellis and Steve Smallman have taken key passages of the Easter story and made them accessible to young readers. Each story is accompanied by kid-friendly illustrations. At the beginning of each chapter, the creators have referenced the scripture passages which may lead moms and dads to re-examine these important passages of scripture.

A DVD is also included with THE STORY OF EASTER. It contains about a half dozen stories which also take place during the same period. The stylized computer animation isn't of the caliber of Veggie Tales or Pixar, but its well done and gives kids another piece of the puzzle. I plan on passing the book and DVD along to our church youth director so he can share it wit the kids during junior church. At three minutes, the segments are the perfect length to watch and discuss as a group.

Read and Share: The Story of Easter Overview

From the Read and Share Bible brand, this retelling of the Easter story is explained in a way that helps young children understand the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

Based on the International Children's Bible, this story walks through the last week of Christ's life and is told in a way that teaches children about the amazing gift Jesus gave us. Events include His triumphant entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday through His appearance to the disciples and His ascension.  The "Can You Retell the Story" activity at the end of the book is a fun way to hide the Word in their heart.

The animated DVD includes a 15-minutes of stories plus coloring pages and other bonus features.

Easter Bugs : A Springtime Pop-up by David A Carter

Easter Bugs : A Springtime Pop-up by David A Carter Review

My boys (now age 5 & 9) ADORE David A. Carter's pop-up books in his "Bug" series and have for years!! We have a rather large collection of them. We haven't found one yet that they didn't enjoy. The artwork is engaging, the pop-up's are creative & the writing is silly & funny!

I probably wouldn't recommend the books for under the age of 3 to read/play with (unless the caregiver is handling the book) as some of the tabs & artwork can be torn if handles roughly. Once the kids have the hang of "touch nicely", these books are great for fun for all!!

Highly recommend!!

Easter Bugs : A Springtime Pop-up by David A Carter Overview

All kinds of bugs are hiding behind colorful Easter eggs, just waiting for you to find them!
(And there are lots more fun surprises, too!)

Easter Bugs : A Springtime Pop-up by David A Carter Specifications

David A. Carter, paper engineer extraordinaire, is back with more pop-up bugs! Fans of The 12 Bugs of Christmas, Alpha Bugs, Love Bugs, and the other silly pop-ups in Carter's insect series, will be delighted at the new surprises in store with Easter Bugs. "Spring has sprung and left winter behind. How many Easter Bugs can you find?" Who's in the dip-dyed rainbow egg? How about the egg with baby blue dots? The jeweled egg? The purple peekaboo egg? Inside each brightly decorated egg waits a new bug, unlike any you'll ever see in nature (unless genetic engineering goes awry). There's the fluffy yellow Chick-Chick Bug, with touchable fleecy soft fur. And some shiny silver Raindrop Bugs. There's even a bucktoothed Bunny Bug with turquoise spots. For a spectacular finale, Carter constructs a basket full of every insect depicted. Kids will have a grand old time guessing what kind of creepy-crawly critter lies behind each egg. Here's one delicious Easter treat that won't cause cavities! (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Daughter of York: A Novel

Daughter of York: A Novel Review

I really enjoyed this book about Margaret of York. She was a very smart, strong woman who dealt with the political turmoil of the time better than most men. A lot people criticize the book for Margaret's relationship with Anthony Woodville, but I found the relationship very believeable. I think without that love story, then book might have been less exciting. I also think that sometimes fans of Historical Fiction forget that it is exactly that, FICTION! I enjoyed learning more about Burgundy and Charles the Bold. I felt I could relate with Margaret of York, which I believe is the goal of most writers. Good job Anne Easter Smith! I look forward tor eading your other books!

Daughter of York: A Novel Feature

Daughter of York: A Novel Overview

History tells us that the intelligent, wealthy, and powerful Margaret of York had everything any woman could want, except for love. The acclaimed author of A Rose for the Crown takes us between the lines of history and into her heart.

It is 1461: Edward, son of Richard of York, ascends to the throne, and his willful sister, Margaret, immediately becomes a pawn in European politics as Edward negotiates her marriage. The young Margaret falls deeply in love with Anthony Woodville, the married brother of Edward's queen, Elizabeth. But Edward has arranged for his sister to wed Charles, son of the Duke of Burgundy, and soon Margaret is setting sail for her new life. Her official escort: Anthony Woodville.

Margaret of York eventually commanded the respect and admiration of much of Europe, but it appears to history that she had no emotional intimate. Anne Easter Smith's rare gift for storytelling and her extensive research reveal the love that burned at the center of Margaret's life, adding a new dimension to the story of one of the fifteenth century's most powerful women.

Happy Easter, Little Critter (Look-Look)

Happy Easter, Little Critter (Look-Look) Review

Little Critter books have always been favorites in our house. My 13 year old loved them when he was very young and now my 2 1/2 year old loves them. Mercer Mayers illustration style just seems to draw kids in as he captures the emotions of children in his own silly way. As the title suggest this book has the Little Critter and his family celebrating Easter beginning with the kids finding the treats the Easter Bunny has left them.

From there it's off to church service. Little Critter does NOT like getting dressed up. So much like some little boys that I know! After church there's a big picnic where all of the kids dye their Easter Eggs and Little Critter thinks his are the best! The eggs are then hidden and all the kids go on an Easter egg hunt. Critter finds a lot but scowls when he misses one and someone else finds it. It's all good fun!

Now back home the kids finish their easter by digging into the wonderful treats that the Easter Bunny left them. Kids really love this book because they see Little Critter enjoying all of the fun activities and treats that they will be enjoying on Easter Day. Perfectly captures the spirit of Easter. Always a big hit!

My Easter Basket: And the True Story of Easter

My Easter Basket: And the True Story of Easter Review

In this book Mary Manz Simon encourages a symbolic connection between the cultural aspects and the religious foundations of this holiday. It begins "The colors in this basket are my own special way for me to tell the story of that first Easter Day."

Through sturdy die-cut pages, the text then highlights different colors (green, purple, red, white, brown and yellow) and tells what these can remind us of the biblical story of Jesus. For example, green (this page shows an egg dyed green, but this could also relate to the green Easter grass) reminds us of the palm branches set before Jesus during his triumphal entry. The story, as told through these symbolic colors, goes from Palm Sunday through the resurrection on Easter Day. The book concludes with John 11:25, quoted from the International Children's Bible, New Century Version. "Jesus said, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will have life even if he dies. And he who lives and believes in me will never die.'"

The illustrations by Linda Clearwater feature heavy outlines, vibrant colors and lots of glitter. While the main part of the book shows an Easter basket and all the goodies stuffed inside, an inset shows the events of the first Easter: Palm Sunday, the last supper, the rock rolled away, etc.

What I Like: Everything! This book incorporates current cultural traditions without making them the focus of the holiday. Rather it reminds children what's important about Easter by giving an accurate, but easy to understand retelling. The book is solid and attractive.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter

Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter Review

The people in the North and South are different! I've seen a boss from up north be presented with a birthday cake from his staff, thank them and carry that cake to his office. The next day he brought the leftovers back for the workers to "enjoy". What's thought of as manners in the South is overkill up North. But I've met some very lovely and friendly people up north, they can't help the fact that half the year they are stuck inside and don't get out enough to be comfortable with the kind of up close and personal way we do things.

This book showed the funny ways we both have of living life and taking what life gives us in stride. Being yourself and taking pride in your work is what this book was all about and enjoying those around you with all their weird ways is part of the fun!

I'm looking forward to the next book which I hope will find Peter Owen taking his fair share of southern comfort!!

Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter Overview

Leelee Satterfield seemed to have it all: a gorgeous husband, two adorable daughters, and roots in the sunny city of Memphis, Tennessee.  So when her husband gets the idea to uproot the family to run a quaint Vermont inn, Leelee is devastated…and her three best friends are outraged.  But she’s loved Baker Satterfield since the tenth grade, how can she not indulge his dream?  Plus, the glossy photos of bright autumn trees and smiling children in ski suits push her over the edge…after all, how much trouble can it really be?

But Leelee discovers pretty fast that there’s a truckload of things nobody tells you about Vermont until you live there: such as mud season, vampire flies, and the danger of ice sheets careening off roofs.  Not to mention when her beloved Yorkie decides to pick New Year’s Eve to go to doggie heaven—she encounters one more New England oddity: frozen ground means you can’t bury your dead in the winter.  And that Yankee idiosyncrasy just won’t do.

The inn they’ve bought also has its host of problems: an odor that no amount of potpourri can erase, tacky décor, and a staff of peculiar Vermonters whose personalities are as unique as the hippopotamus collection gracing the fireplace mantle. The whole operation is managed by Helga, a stern German woman who takes special delight in bullying Leelee for her southern gentility. Needless to say, it doesn’t take long for Leelee to start wondering when to drag out the moving boxes again.

But when an unexpected hardship takes Leelee by surprise, she finds herself left alone with an inn to run, a mortgage to pay, and two daughters to raise. But this Southern belle won’t be run out of town so easily. Drawing on the Southern grit and inner strength she didn’t know she had, Leelee decides to turn around the Inn, her attitude and her life. In doing so, she makes friends with her neighbors, finds a little romance, and realizes there’s a lot more in common with Vermont than she first thought.

In this moving and comedic debut, Lisa Patton paints a hilarious portrait of life in Vermont as seen through the eyes of a southern belle readers won’t soon forget. A charming fish-out-of-water tale of one woman who learns to stand up for herself—in sandals and snow boots—against the odds.

An Easter Gift for Me

An Easter Gift for Me Review

Together author Crystal Bowman and illustrator Claudine Gevry have created some wonderful die-cut boardbooks with strong Christian themes. This book is no exception.

The book tells about Jesus' life. It quickly explains He was born a long time ago, sent by God from Heaven to Earth. When He grew up, He told people He was God's Son and, if they believed in Him and followed His instructions, they could live forever with Him in Heaven. Jesus performed many miracles. "But some of the people did not understand the way Jesus fit into God's special plan. He hung on a cross and that's where He died ... But Jesus is God so He didn't stay dead." The book ends with a mother explaining to her daughter that this story is true! She then tells her how if we believe and obey, we can see Jesus in Heaven someday.

This book is saturated with vibrant colors. The illustrations are simple and friendly.

What I Like: It's so colorful! It's biblically accurate and perfectly child-friendly. I like the easy transition from Christ's life to His death. Some books assign blame or have disconnected storylines. This book creates a seamless timeline. Also, I appreciate how, other than the cover, this book makes no reference to egg hunts or secular Easter traditions.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Dean Marney is a hilarious author. Lizzie (his main character) is full of sarcasm and mischief and she is very lovable. I laughed out loud many times at the things she would say, especially when it came to her brother Booker. I was also surprised at the wisdom in the book. Dean Marney used the Greek myth of Persephone to illustrate his points and it all worked very well. I highly recommend this book! Very funny!

My son (3) loves this book. He really engages with the lost little lamb and is very happy when the shephard finds him. It is a great size for him to hold and read. He retells the story now on his own after only a few readings. It has been a wonderful springboard to conversations about Jesus. It is grouped with other Easter books, but I plan to keep it around all year.

Clifford's Happy Easter

Clifford's Happy Easter Review

"Hi! I'm Emily Elizabeth, and I love spring. So does my dog Clifford. The best part of springtime is Easter."

Emily Elizabeth's Easter preparations with Clifford also evoke many other holidays around this time of the year, including St. Patrick's Day in March and Flag Day in June.

This humorous book centers around preparations for an Easter egg hunt. Emily Elizabeth's Mom and Dad provide an enormous quantity of eggs. Emily Elizabeth and Clifford begin to color them. But Clifford, being a VERY BIG RED DOG, has a few problems. He crushes more eggs than he is able to decorate. He falls into the vat of dye for the eggs. Before he's done, you even see a tie-dyed Clifford!

But Clifford's size comes in handy when he helps the children hunt for the eggs. He can see and reach all kinds and places that the children would otherwise miss.

When the eggs are all found, Emily Elizabeth and Clifford share the eggs with their friends. "After all, friends are what make Easter a happy day."

This book has many attractions for youngsters. First, it provides lots of simple sentences that make for a good beginning reader. The sentences are echoed in the illustrations to provide clues for your child that will help her or him decode the words.

Second, the story encourages warm feelings towards family, animals, and friends. Children need to develop their "emotional intelligence" in all directions, and many books forget to nurture this part of the budding reader.

Third, the book takes a friendly look at differences. Sure, if you are different, that will present some problems . . . but it will also provide some opportunities. Children are very sensitive about differences, and this book should help reduce the anxiety.

Fourth, the story is very funny in many places. Humor is a great way to attract children to valuable lessons, and this book is outstanding in making the subjects more fun.

Fifth, the book goes off into several imaginative tracks that will encourage your child to use his or her imagination. What does happen when different combinations of colors get mixed together?

I suggest that you use this book to encourage your child to plan out some Easter egg activities. You can duplicate or build on what is in the book. Don't forget to try some color experiments with the eggs!

By the way, having been the Easter egg hider for three decades, I suggest you make a little map of where they all are. That can save some smelly leftovers in the future.

May your family's Easter be filled with the spirit of the true meaning of that holiday!

Clifford's Happy Easter Overview

Clifford loves to help Emily Elizabeth, but his big red paws break eggs instead of painting them. Luckily, Clifford helps Emily another way-in her dreams! A bucket of Easter-egg dye creates the most colorful Clifford adventure yet, and gets Emily ready for an unforgettable holiday.

The King's Grace: A Novel

The King's Grace: A Novel Review

I have really enjoyed all of Anne Easter Smith's historical fiction novels. Since reading all three of the books I have gained a much deeper understanding of the Yorks, Lancasters and Tudors. This was a gap in my knowledge of British history so I'm glad I have a better picture in my mind.

Grace Plantagenet is the bastard daughter of Edward Plantagenet and Grace is used as the storyteller for the beginning of the Tudor reign. For most of her life she grew up in the company of her cousins and Edward's Queen. She is a faithful, gentle and loving daughter to her step mother and they form a close bond. Grace is with her in her final days and promises to find out if one of her sons (the two princes in the tower) is still alive.

This promise puts Grace in conflict with her half sister the Queen as she is married to their families enemy. It even had her banished from court for a few years, causing long separations from her husband who was in the service of the King's maternal uncle. There is no doubt that this book gives the reader the concept of fear of King Henry VII through Grace's eyes and a better understanding of why Henry VIII turned out the way he did.

The thing I really liked about reading all three of these books is that they tie into each other, obviously it is the same family but various stories are weaved together to give you a clearer picture and deeper understanding. Although the mystery of the two princes in the tower and what happened to them will, I fear, remain an unsolved historical mystery.

The King's Grace: A Novel Overview

The bestselling author of A Rose for the Crown and Daughter of York takes a young woman that history noticed only once and sets her on a quest for the truth about the murder of two boys and a man who claims to be king.

All that history knows of Grace Plantagenet is that she was an illegitimate daughter of Edward IV and one of two attendants aboard the funeral barge of his widowed queen. Thus, she was half sister of the famous young princes, who -- when this story begins in 1485 -- had been housed in the Tower by their uncle, Richard III, and are presumed dead.

But in the 1490s, a young man appears at the courts of Europe claiming to be Richard, duke of York, the younger of the boys, and seeking to claim his rightful throne from England's first Tudor king, Henry VII. But is this man who he says he is? Or is he Perkin Warbeck, a puppet of Margaret of York, duchess of Burgundy, who is determined to regain the crown for her York family? Grace Plantagenet finds herself in the midst of one of English history's greatest mysteries. If she can discover the fate of the princes and the true identity of Perkin Warbeck, perhaps she will find her own place in her family.

My Little Sticker Book Easter

My Little Sticker Book Easter Review

My grandson loves this little sticker book. it does not have much of a story, but it is easy for young ones to figure out where the stickers go, and gives them a sense of accomplishment. I like this better than some others because it has a pretty combination of actual photos and drawings. We've worked on this book several times, and it still holds his interest. Even though it is listed for ages 4-8, I find it appropriate for a two year old (with supervision), and think it might be a bit boring for a 7-8 year old.

The Challenge of Easter

The Challenge of Easter Review

The resurrection is absolutely central to the Christian faith. As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:17-19, "and if Christ is not raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied." Understandably then, both Christ's historical resurrection and the resurrection hope of all believers are routinely targeted by Satan and the powers of this world.

In The Challenge of Easter (excerpted from the 1999 book The Challenge of Jesus), N.T. Wright, Anglican Bishop of Durham, U.K., offers a succinct rebuttal of popular attacks on the resurrection and articulates an apology of its primacy and power from biblical, historical, and cultural contexts and exhorts believers to live out the hope of the living Christ.

Wright points out that the Church from its earliest days was a "resurrection movement," and that the recurring biblical phrases "the kingdom of God" and "the resurrection of the dead" were key components of the first century Jewish worldview which would never have been understood by that audience to mean a merely "spiritual" experience. He shows that Christ's resurrection inaugurated the reality of the kingdom in time and space, something the apostles clearly understood as the starting point for their entire ministry.
Though at times a controversial figure (a discussion beyond the scope of this review), Wright demonstrates a passion for this truth that all believers should take to heart. He reminds the reader that the fact of the resurrection undercuts both the false hope of realizing the kingdom of God through human effort alone and the misdirection of simply waiting for God to someday return and take care of it all on His own. In his words, Christ laid the foundation of the coming kingdom through the resurrection, commissioned us to build on that as we follow Him in proclaiming the victory to a fallen world, and will return in glory to complete the work.

Challenge of Easter is an accessible yet scholarly take on this key issue that is ideal for solidifying this fundamental truth for new believers, expositing it for skeptical seekers, or devotional meditation to recall it to our hearts and minds and challenge us again to living it out boldly.

The Challenge of Easter Overview

Why do we celebrate Easter? Lost among the colored eggs and chocolate candies is Easter's bold, almost unbelievable claim: Jesus has risen from the dead, and now everything is different.

Historian, biblical scholar and bestselling author N. T. Wright takes a step back from the hoopla surrounding Easter to look at it in its earliest context, where we see a band of followers discovering the fulfillment of all the promises God had made to their people over the centuries, and pronouncing a new era that unsettled their friends and scandalized their oppressors. That era extends to our day, where to celebrate Easter is to receive an invitation to live as though God is among us, making everything new.
