Izzy's Christmas Song

Izzy Baline published his first song, "Marie from Sunny Italy," when he was 19 years old and working as a singing waiter in a Chinatown restaurant. During a career spanning more than eighty years he wrote thousands of songs; he published 812 of them, and 451 of those became hits.

During his most productive years Izzy wrote a song a day. One critic even called him a writing machine. It must be remembered, however, that he usually did not write his songs in a day; he just finished them. His songs had gestation periods of months or even years.

Izzy wrote many of his songs for the Broadway stage and for motion pictures. Some of his best-known songs are "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "A Pretty Girl is like a Melody," "Blue Skies," "Cheek to Cheek," "Easter Parade," "There's No Business Like Show Business," and "God Bless America."

His songs were performed in the movies of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, among others, and Al Jolson sang "Blue Skies" in The Jazz Singer (1927), the first "talking picture."

Izzy completed his most famous song, "White Christmas," on January 8, 1940, and Bing Crosby introduced it to the world in Holiday Inn (1942), for which it won the academy award for Best Song.

Reportedly, Izzy began composing the song during a five-year stay in sunny southern California, where he was working on films, and finished it after returning to New York. Some of the many artists-besides Crosby-who recorded "White Christmas" include Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie Nelson, Fats Domino, and Michael Bolton.

More than 30 million copies of "White Christmas," composed by a Russian-born Jew named Izzy Baline, have been sold worldwide. But Izzy Baline is not the name under which he published his music. Professionally, he used a different name, one he adopted when very young. We know him as Irving Berlin.

10 Free and Low-Cost Ways to Give Kids the Best Christmas Ever

A fantastic Christmas doesn't have to mean big bills in January.

The real magic of Christmas - the stuff that makes kids' eyes light up, gives them a warm glow inside, and creates delicious memories - costs little or nothing.

Here are ten ideas for free and low-cost "magic" the kids will love:

1. Sing Christmas carols with your kids while cooking and cleaning together, while wrapping gifts, or just before tuck-in time.

2. As a special treat during December, serve hot chocolate milk with a candy-cane stirrer. While your child sips and stirs, read aloud a favorite holiday book. Or, if the Nativity story is part of your family's celebration, point out that the candy cane is shaped like a shepherd's crook. Then read or tell the story of the angel who appeared to shepherds watching their flock at night.

3. Take a plate of home-made cookies to a homeless shelter or to people who work at night, such as firefighters or hospital emergency staff. If you're celebrating the birth of Jesus, also put a bit of food outside for animals on Christmas Eve night to honor the animals at the manger -- an old Slovak custom.

4. Give each family member 10 strips of paper in holiday colors. Let everyone write or draw something they're thankful for on each strip. Link the strips into a chain and hang as a decoration.

5. Make thank-you cards for each other, sharing what you appreciate about each member of the family. Open them on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning.

6. Make paper snowflakes and display them in a window. Here's how: Trace and cut out a circle from white paper (the flat end of a coffee can or oatmeal box is a nice size for tracing). Fold your circle in half. Next, fold your half into thirds, so that you're left with a shape that resembles 1/6 of a pie. Now, snip out bits of paper here and there and unfold your masterpiece.

7. Make a simple paper-chain Advent calendar. Cut 25 strips of paper, and number them 1-25. Link the strips to form a chain. With yarn, string or ribbon, hang your chain in the middle of a doorway with link #1 at the bottom. Each day starting December 1, let the kids remove the bottom link of the chain.

8. Go to your local library and check out children's books about the holidays. Put the books in a special box or basket in your family room or living room.

9. Have a holiday family movie night at home. Get a holiday movie from your library or video rental shop and watch it together. Include bowls of popcorn if your kids are past the age where popcorn presents a choke-hazard.

10. Avoid post-Christmas let-down by planning an outing or special family activity each day until the kids go back to school.

A PURE KID-STUFF BONUS TIP: After dark, turn on your Christmas tree lights and turn off all other lights in the room, including the star or other "topper" on your tree. Now lie back on the floor with your kids and notice the cool shadows on your ceiling.

Christmas Song - Jingle Bells History and Fun Facts!

'Jingle Bells' is one of the best known Christmas songs in the world yet its history tells us that is not specifically a Christmas song. Known today as a fun and laughter filled Christmas song and it is popular as the subject of parody. James Lord Pierpont originally wrote the song in 1857 and it was copyrighted at the time as 'One Horse Open Sleigh'. The song was reprinted in 1859 with the revised title of 'Jingle Bells'. Pierpont wrote the song for a Thanksgiving program at a church in Savannah, Georgia in the USA where he was the resident organist.

The tune of 'Jingle Bells' has been used in German and French songs to celebrate winter fun. Lyrics are completely unrelated to the ones we all know and love. For example, Francis Blanche wrote the French song 'Vive Le Vent' meaning 'Long Live the Wind' with references to new year's day.
In 1898 'Jingle Bells' was first recorded by the Edison Male Quartette in the USA. It has since been recorded by many great artists including Bing Crosby and The Andrew Sisters. In 2006 when Kimberley Locke sang it, it became a number one hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Here is a fun fact. In 1965, December 16th 'Jingle Bells' was the first song broadcast from outer space. Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford, the astronauts aboard Gemini 6 played a prank. They relayed to mission control that they saw a UFO with eight smaller UFO's in front. Their reports followed that the pilot in the larger command module UFO was wearing a red suit. The prank concluded with the astronaut duo playing 'Jingle Bells' on a harmonica accompanied by sleigh bells that they had smuggled on board. Today at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum both instruments are on display. Interestingly, they are considered the first musical instruments to be played in space!

'Jingle Bells' has also been the subject of parody. The best known homage to the original song is 'Jingle Bell Rock' by Bobby Helms. In the 1960's children in the USA commonly sang the verse 'Jingle bells, Santa smells, Easter's on its way. Oh what fun it is to ride in a beat up Chevrolet.' Here is another parody of 'Jingle Bells', a verse which adults and children alike loved and continue to love to sing while enjoying a few laughs along the way 'Dashing through the snow, on a pair of broken skis, crashing into trees, and a piece of moldy cheese Ha Ha Ha, the snow is turning red, I think I'm almost dead, please rush me to the hospital before I lose my head. Ha Ha Ha.'

Christmas, Teach Your Children The True Meaning Of Christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time of the year. We should take the opportunity to discuss the origins of Christmas and the attitude of giving with our children. We should allow our children to participate in the Christmas school plays and church school plays.

Over the years commercialism has drowned out the true meaning of Christmas. It is up to us as parents to restore Christmas back to its rightful place. We can start in our own homes with our own families.

Family togetherness, unconditional love and goodwill should be the bywords of Christmas. Stories and pictures about the origins of Christmas should be all around our homes. Our churches should be taking a major role in spreading the true Christmas spirit.

Our church should have many small social activities leading up to one major event that will take place very close to Christmas day. All families should be required to attend. With a view to inviting another family. The invited family should be a family that does not attend church on a regular basis.

Make sure your children are directly involved in at least one charity event over the holiday. They can donate a toy or even help with a fundraising drive for those less fortunate.

Try not to purchase toys that overwhelm the children. Yes, make sure the toy will make your child feel special. However, that can be done without overkill. Be sure to remind them of the true gift of Christmas which is baby Jesus.
